This beautifully produced retrospective volume from Asahi Sonorama includes work produced between 1939 and 1961. It focuses on the customs and folkways of rural Niigata Prefecture, Japan's leading rice producing area. All of the pictures show the area covered in snow, as it is for approximately one third of each year. In scenes that positively medieval, Hamaya captured a way of life that was already rapidly disappearing.
