Unto's dat of birth and death are unknown. What is know id that he was an art photographer in Tokyo in the 1920s and 1930s. He was a very active member of several photo clubs and one of the sixteen photographers who founded the influential Tokyo Shashi Renmei, a federation of five photo clubs in Tokyo promoting certain concepts and movements within photography. In the 1920s Unto gained recognition for his nudes. They are a textbook example of the Japanese pictorial female nude after the Westerns standards. Unto was a very skilful oil printer and used this versatile technique to create photos with the character and appearance of paintings.
