Sarah Van Marcke

Overview

In 2010 Van Marcke made a road trip of more than 3000 kilometers in Southern Japan along a series of architectural sites from well-known architects such as Kenzo Tange and Tadao Ando. Her choice for these locations was motivated by the overconstructed character they reflected and realized utopia. Van Marcke employed physical elements found at the locations and social and anthropological facets she encountered in local culture. This resulted in integrating typical body language, suggesting a masquerade that hides a world and using simple formal elements characterizing contemporary Japan.
