Sae Honda
EVERYBODY NEEDS A ROCK
Drawing an inspiration from a new kind of rock called 'Plastiglomerate' which contains plastic fragments, this project questions 'where does the border lies between natural objects and artifacts?'. And it aims to raise awareness of hidden value in the problematized matter. Sae Honda collects plastic waste together with natural materials surrounding it, in her biotope. The collected materials are melted together into a unique, local artificial stone, and the results are refined by cutting and polishing. She simultaneously plays three types of roles: a force of nature that petrify and create rocks, a miner and a stone cutter. Every rock she makes contains the memories of today: just like diamonds are the result of mantle activities during the formation of the earth.
Some of the works of the project are in the permanent collection of Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
