Kensuke Koike

Kensuke Koike (b. 1980, Nagoya, Japan) transforms forgotten vintage photographs into striking, often comical, new works of art. Trained as a painter at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, he stumbled into photography by chance, sparking his unique approach to image-making.

Using vintage postcards and found images, Koike meticulously cuts, rearranges, and reassembles elements without adding or removing anything—a process he calls “no more, no less.” Each piece is a fresh narrative born solely from the image itself, blending precision and creativity. With just one chance to work on the original, his method carries a sense of risk and tension.

His art has been exhibited internationally, including at The Photographers’ Gallery in London, IMA in Tokyo, Asama International Photo Festival in Japan and the Guangdong Museum of Art in China. His work resides in renowned collections like the Victoria and Albert Museum, UK, as well as private collections worldwide.
