IBASHO is proud to present a solo exhibition of Japanese artist Akiko Takizawa, who won the prestigious HSBC Prix pour la Photographie in 2014. Takizawa works both with traditional processes and contemporary ideas, carrying forward the honorable tradition of Japanese innovation in black and white photography since the Second World War. In the tradition of Japanese photography masters as Issei Suda, Eikoh Hosoe and Daido Moriyama, she uses intense contrast, deep blacks and fleeting highlights in dramatic and emotional compositions. Through using the Collotype printing on traditional Japanese paper, an extremely rare and precious photographic process, life and time glows in her carbonblack images.
"I am constantly questioning this modern time we are living in. By capturing people in a specific place through photography I hope to understand the world we are living in, and where we belong."
