Suzuki was a Japanese photographer, (1943 - 2000), who was very much part of the 60's generation of photographers who explored the visual capabilities of the book medium to their extremes. The way the images appeared on a printed page was what interested Suzuki.
'Soul and Soul' is dedicated to Suzuki's sister and reads like a personal history. He was born in Iwaki City in the Fukujima Prefecture, as coal-mining town, and the first series in 'Soul and Soul' is comprised of photographs of a coal-mining town. The photobook also includes images of traveling actors, bathers, and children at play, as well as image of cells in a film reel. In these, each photograph seems like a still from a unmentioned movie, moments that are taken out of a larger sequence and sometimes awkward when isolated.
