As a seminal platform for a new visual photographic aesthetic, Provoke magazine is considered among the most important periodicals to be published in postwar Japan. Founded in 1968 by Koji Taki, Takuma Nakahira, Takahiko Okada and Yutaka Takanashi (later joined by Daido Moriyama with the 2nd issue), Provoke established a radical photographic language that rejected sentimentality and the subjective documentary style of previous generations in favor of a raw, out-of-focus style influenced by the student riots and political upheaval of the late 1960s in Japan. Provoke 2 marks the introduction of Daido Moriyama as a Provoke member and features many of his best known purposely unpolished are-bure-boke (rough, blurred, out-of-focus) images along with a portfolio by Nakahira. This is a excellent example of a must-have periodical for any serious photobook collector.
