On the occasion of his exhibition together with William Klein at the Tate Modern, Daido Moriyama travelled to London full of the enthusiasm he had felt as a young photographer while flipping through Klein’s seminal book ‘New York’. Inspired by its photojournalistic approach and freewheeling camera work, Moriyama would in time bring his own lens to focus on the darker sides of urban life and mundane, sometimes seedy snapshots of the city. In this series of images, he gets up close and personal with London in the same way, delivering stunningly layered colour photographs that impart all the directness, intimacy and energy of a city in constant motion.
