Lavinia: this Italian-sounding name of Latin origin alone evokes a poetic world, with the scent of citrus fruits and honey. With this series, FLORE takes us on the trail of a Grand Tour of Italy, rather like the one undertaken by the romantic artists of the 19th century: the technique she uses, the slight blur and grain of the images, their colouring reminiscent of autochromes, all contribute to taking us on a journey back in time.
As always with FLORE, each of her series points to a part of her being, as if it were rooted in a larger, older history, as if she had inherited the past of others and wanted us to experience it. Here again, this intimate part does exist: when she was emptying her aunt's house, she found a collection of letters, traces of a long friendship between her aunt and an Italian woman called Lavinia.
