L'odeur de la nuit était celle du jasmin follows on from FLORE's book Lointains souvenirs (Éditions Contrejour, 2016), which offered a variation on Marguerite Duras's Indochinese youth. In this new opus, FLORE draws on her childhood memories and the stories of her grandparents, who lived at the same time and in the same places as Marguerite Duras, to uncover unfathomable mysteries that nourish what she now feels to be a shared part of the imagination between her and the writer. In this way, she continues to ‘photographically invent’ an almost mythical Indochina. Short extracts from texts by Marguerite Duras form a counterpoint to the black-and-white photographs, which have been turned to tea. Through these technical processes, the artist shapes as much as she restores the world unfolded before her eyes, extracting images that confront the fragility of memories and the capacity of photography to create truth that is truer than reality.
