“From the start, Yannig Hedel’s work shows precocious and singular peculiarities. His black and white film photographs of the first decades are those of a photographer-surveyor of cities, whose tenacious quest is expressed neither in the street photography nor in the urban views that otherwise characterize the 80s. His prodigiously silent images present geometric shapes extracted from the city. Each one carries the effects of a discrete metamorphosis, whose mainspring is in the loss of scale: gables of buildings transmuted into pyramids, chimneys enhanced to the size of a building, ornamental features from the 30s reminiscent of Mayan temples. The shades of gray are remarkably subtle, supported by extensive solid areas that emanate from its geometric forms.”
