A beautiful portfolio of photographs from Japanese photographer, Iwata Nakayama. A mix of surrealist multiple exposures, portraiture, and street scenes from the Japanese avant-garde master.
Nakayama was a leader of Shinko Shashin, Japan’s New Photography movement. After graduating from the new photography program at the Toyko University of the Arts, Nakayama studied in California. His professional career began in New York, where he joined Toyo Kikuchi’s studio as an assistant, then opened his own studio.
He later moved to Paris where he befriended Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, and Enrico Prampolini. After returning to Japan in 1927, he became a founding member of the Ashiya Camera Club and helped create KOGA magazine, bringing the New Photography movement to life.
