Baba - Masatoshi Naito

Tohoku no Minkan Shinko
Masatoshi Naito, 1979
hardcover with dust jacket 98 pages
Publisher: Asahi Sonorama
Dimensions: 216 x 216 mm

Originally trained as a scientist, Naito took up photography professionally in the early sixties. He developed an interest in ethnography and folklore and was especially fascinated with the mummified remains of priests who had starved themselves in order to attain enlightenment at the sacred mountain of Dewa Yudono-san in Tohoku. He photographed the itako mediums and spiritual places of this area along with its folk culture and popular religious practices. This book focuses on similar subject matter. Using an open flash and mostly working at night, Naito's images endow people and objects alike with a mystical aura. He weaves the ancient tales into photographic narratives.
