Sha Shin Magazine Vol. 3: Spell

The third issue of Sha Shin magazine, titled “Spell”, focuses on the relationship between language and photography. Opening with individual series by photographers Kikuji Kawada, Naohiro Utagawa, Yuki Onodera, Yoko Kusano, Seiji Kumagai, Chieko Shiraishi and Gozo Yoshimasu, the magazine continues with essays, interviews and reports to examine its titular theme and provide an overview of the current state of Japanese photography.

The English portion of the magazine includes translations of all contributing artists’ statements, essays by Shun Uchibayashi (“Spell – Words as Support Media of Images”), Kotaro Iizawa (“‘Photographs and Words’ of Photobooks”) and novelist Akiko Otake (“Photography in Words”), as well as a foreword by magazine founder Masakazu Murakami.
