"Helix" is the first photobook by photographer Shinpei Yamagami. Helix means spiral, and the photobook consists of two series of landscapes: one in monochrome and one in color.

SPECTRUM, a monochrome series shot in Kamakura, the artist's hometown, between 2014 and 2015, was born from a thorough engagement with the lives of the subjects. The photographs were created by stripping away all personal feelings and memories related to the place. The artist says that he gained a great deal from the lives of the subjects during the shooting process.

The Disintegration Loops is a series of color photographs taken of the same location after SPECTRUM. This series was created by an artist who, while traditionally focusing on subtraction in photography and valuing time and light, also confronts color. It was created in response to what the artist gained from the subjects of SPECTRUM.

This time, "Helix" is a re-creation and reconstruction of two previous series, SPECTRUM and The Disintegration Loops, through the artist's current perspective. "What is important to me is not the place but the time, not the self but the subject, and I have created this far with the intensity of my gaze toward that," says Yamagami. We hope you will feel the density of the gaze embedded in the photographs of photographer Shinpei Yamagami, who places photography and life in the same place, through his works.
