The photobook “New Life” by Issei Suda reveals a secret affair that unfolded between the photographer and an unnamed woman in a room someday in 2002. Through the Polaroid photographs, the reader follows Suda’s gaze. The woman is captured in different poses and situations – sometimes apparently modeling, other times authentic and in the act. Her face is never quite revealed; Suda’s frames speak of lust and admiration.
Unlike common Polaroid film which develops automatically, Suda’s process involved applying a chemical to the film by hand. The results are deeply atmospheric, peculiar and sensual images with an almost painterly flair. A quiet little photobook that reveals the hidden face of Suda Issei.
